South Africa Coach Pleads with Nigeria to Secure World Cup Spot After Costly Draw with Zimbabwe

By Africa Citizens Sports Desk

Johannesburg — South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos has appealed to Nigeria’s Super Eagles to finish the job and keep Africa’s hopes strong in the race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after Bafana Bafana’s costly 0–0 draw with Zimbabwe on Thursday.

The goalless stalemate in Johannesburg left South Africa’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance — forcing them to rely partly on Nigeria’s performance in their upcoming fixtures to secure the group’s top spot.

“It’s disappointing because we created enough to win,” Broos told reporters. “Now, we have to hope Nigeria can secure qualification for the continent’s pride. Sometimes football teaches you patience and humility.”

The match saw several missed chances for South Africa, including key opportunities from Percy Tau and Evidence Makgopa, while Zimbabwe’s defense held firm to frustrate the home side.

With the draw, Bafana Bafana now sit second in their group, two points behind Nigeria — meaning their fate could depend on results elsewhere.

Across social media, South African fans expressed mixed emotions: frustration at the missed chances, yet solidarity in hoping that Nigeria can fly the continental flag high.

“When Africa goes to the World Cup, we all go,” one user posted on X. “Let’s rally behind each other — it’s not just about flags, it’s about pride.”

As the qualifiers head into their decisive final rounds, the drama continues — and for South Africa, the wait begins.
